Research in data theory generally covers the statistical and mathematical foundations of data science. It tries to provide insight into why the tools and methods of data science work, or, indeed, why they sometimes do not.
The Departments of Statistics & Data Science and Mathematics at UCLA have many researchers that address questions in data theory. Some of these are theoretical and some more data-centric. A list of recent publications is given below.
